Handmade Cards

Watch Narsh’s abstract art card tutorial and get inspired to make your own art cards.

It has come to the end of the academic year where the giving and receiving of gifts is in the air. I’ve been experimenting with alcohol inks and creating some art cards. The idea being that is is a small piece of personalized artwork that the receiver can actually frame and hang if they wishes. Here’s my Youtube tutorial of the process.

Hand Made Ink Series

When sea slugs inspire art: Check out Narsh Henckel’s artwork created from beetroot ink and inspired by sea slugs.

Nudibranch Carnival

Been busy creating plant based inks using berries, beetroot and turmeric. Loving the organic and gentler colours these inks have as compared to commercial paints. This Nudibranch Carnival painting features beetroot ink which has this wonderfully rich fushure colour.

Above, is Chrysalis. Abstracted piece using berry paints and black ink pen.

School Mural

New abstract mural painted on the school walls by artist Narsh Henckel.

Was asked to paint a mural for the performing arts wall at Kent College Dubai. It is nearly finished now but I’ve had to take a break as we’ve switched to online learning again. Can’t wait to finish it once we’re allowed back into the school building.

After a late evening’s painting session.

Close up of one end of the mural near the music room. Musical elements and suspended shapes create a sense of movement. Inspired by a synesthetic dream I had where I heard the music of large paintings.

Really pleased to see my digital artwork entitled ‘Interconnected’ published in the Art -Science zine called Sienna Solstice. It's a refreshing publication that brings a fusion of Arts and Science to its readers and is full of unexpected gems ranging from artwork music, poetry, geeky science articles and so much more.

Wreath of Life

Sparrows here in Dubai who have second and third nestlings run the risk of losing them as the spring turns into scorching summer. I have found several of these perfectly preserved specimens over the years here and I keep them as anatomical reference and artistic inspiration. The ones I don't keep serve as nourishment for all other plants and animals. From death comes life. This is the subject matter of this pen and ink drawing.

This year, due to COVID, we've not been able to get back to the lush UK summer and get out into nature, so I found myself drawing a wreath of many common plants that I would usually pick, make jam, tea or salads with as a way to remember much loved summer activities that have been sorely missed. You may perhaps recognise some of the plants which include, blackberries, wild plantain, hawthorn, honeysuckle, wood sorrel, dandelion, nettles, oak and bracken. By surrounding the intricate drawing of the bird with so many plants, edible to animals and humans, I remind myself of the circle of life, that the death of one creature nourishes the lives of so many others. From something seemingly sad comes so much that is positive and full of life.

There are prints of this drawing available for sale in my Saatchiart shop.

Work in progress. I’ve been so excited to begin creating this series. An inner geometric shape is suspended within the protective space of an outer form. A protected microcosmic world echoed in the outer larger form. I'm hoping to create other more complex shapes and explore different materials used to suspend the inner form.

Inner & Outer Form

The octagonal pattern consists of repeating squares around a central star motif. The square & cube could be see to represent stability, firmness balance and with the inner form also protection and security. As the pieces grow, I may play with these concepts and ideas more. Check out my sculpture gallery for more interesting paper sculptures.
