Inner + Outer form
Work in progress. I’ve been so excited to begin creating this series. An inner geometric shape is suspended within the protective space of an outer form. A protected microcosmic world echoed in the outer larger form. I'm hoping to create other more complex shapes and explore different materials used to suspend the inner form.
The octagonal pattern consists of repeating squares around a central star motif. The square & cube could be see to represent stability, firmness balance and with the inner form also protection and security. As the pieces grow, I may play with these concepts and ideas more. Check out my sculpture gallery for more interesting paper sculptures.
Collage painting-work in progress
Work in progress, highly textured piece with burnt and collaged areas and still some stitching to come. You can see the finished piece and find out more about it in my painting gallery. The original painting and prints of it are for sale along with an opportunity for a donation in my Saatchi Art shop.
Fractured, Not Broken
Close up of a piece made in response to the social injustices and systemic racism highlighted by so many of the unjust events recently brought to the surface in the USA and demonstrated against around the world, punctuated by the devastating death of George Floyd. See the whole piece in my painting gallery and for sale on Saatchi Art where I will also be donating 10% of the profit to a charity working for social justice and reform. Link below.
Sculpture process
Took several days to construct the geometry, draw the intricate patterns and cut out the dodecahedron net.
Quick snap midway in the construction of the top part of the sculpture. Check out the sculpture section of my gallery to see the final piece.
Inside a tulip bud
When my boys were little (about 2 & 4 years old) I once found them in the garden trying to open up tulip flower buds. When I asked them what they were doing they replied that they were trying to find Thumbelina. I began this painting 11 years ago to remember such a lovely moment but never completed it until tonight.
Watercolours, graphite & gouache on watercolour paper.
Paper Structure
Geometric paper sculpture.
Paper structure made of 20 small dodecagonal parts.
Close up to show the intricate paper cutting.
Been working on an intricate 3D structure made up of many cut out dodecagonal pieces that fit together rather like a jigsaw. It takes about 3 hours to make 1 section/level so all in all it took 9 hours to construct this piece so far as it has 3 sections/levels. It took a further 5 hours to work out the actual geometry that is the basis of each section. So far, altogether it has taken 14 hours on this.
Geometric Shell
Golden Section Sea Shell
Taken up the compass, pencil & ruler again to work out the geometry behind the spiral of a shell. Always important to keep the brain cells challenged and boy was this a challenge! You can see the raw geometry (below) underneath the pen and ink sketch.
Art Tutorials
Primary schools often tend to rely on class teachers to plan and deliver art lessons to children which means that teachers can feel ‘out of their depths’ and end up planning lessons that are lacking in key Art skills. As a qualified primary teacher I am in the perfect position to help overloaded classroom teachers feel empowered to teach art. I create free, skill based Art tutorials on my Youtube channel Narsh’s Art and share them across several teaching social media platforms and what’s been so rewarding to discover is that teachers are really happy with them and the children in their classes learn new skills.
Exploring paper sculptures.
Seed Pod
Playful peace inspired by the organic shapes found in tropical seed pods.
Tropical Flower Structure
During this period of Lockdown I’ve found some time to begin a much desired project exploring paper sculpture. The inspirations are microscopic algae, geometric natural forms and tropical seed pods.
Do pop back soon to see what I’ve been up to…
